What is Diabetes and Why Should I Worry About It?

Diabetes is a disease where in your blood glucose, or blood sugar levels are too high. Glucose comes from the foods you eat. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose from food get into your cells to give them energy. Sometimes your body doesn’t make enough—or any—insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells.Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause health problems. It can damage your eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Diabetes can also cause heart disease, stroke and even the need to remove a limb. Although diabetes has no cure, you can take steps to manage your diabetes and stay healthy.

Types of Diabetes:

There are two main types of diabetes - Type 1 and Type 2.

In type 1 diabetes, the body can no longer make any insulin. Insulin is a hormone your body needs to use glucose. Glucose is a sugar your body uses to give you energy. People with type 1 diabetes inject insulin every day in order to live. As of now, type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented.

In type 2 diabetes, which is the more common type, the body makes insulin but does not use it well. Or it may not make enough insulin or the insulin it makes may not work well. When your body does not use insulin then it develops insulin resistance. Type 2 diabetes may be prevented or delayed for many years. Until recently, this type of diabetes was seen only in adults but it is now also occurring increasingly frequently in children.

Almost half of all deaths attributable to high blood glucose occur before the age of 70 years. World Health Organization estimates that diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in 2016.

Early Symptoms of Diabetes:

Early Symptoms of Diabetes

  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent or night time urination
  • Blurry vision
  • Unusual fatigue
  • Feeling hungry constantly
  • Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal

Early detection and treatment of diabetes can decrease the risk of developing the complications of diabetes. If you have any of the above symptoms, then set an appointment with your doctor to check your blood sugar level.
